We are so excited to share Amanda’s first post as our official squad leader in New York City! Amanda is a born-and-raised New York babe. As an artist by trade and a hiker by hobby, her environment is constantly changing, but her love for indulging in new and interesting foods remains constant. She will try any dish once, and that’s a fact. Amanda spends her leisurely hours listening to her vinyl collection with her pit bull Frank (aka Buster), doodling,…

This comes to us from our newest recruit,  Amanda Spinosa, who will be holding it down in NYC for us.  ATTN: Stop what you’re doing right now, come to NYC and get a table at Totto Ramen. Located in Hell’s Kitchen (366 W. 52nd St) this place is basically the ramen mecca. In New York, at least. And probably the entire East Coast, that’s how good it is. When I say ramen, the first thing that comes to mind is probably those curly, dehydrated noodles that resemble…

Fatty Cakes, Fatty Cakes, NYC.

As you might know, I am a sucker for a really good dessert, and apart from doughnuts my other love is cookies. When I was in Brooklyn checking out the City Reliquary Museum they were selling local sweets and I got to try a Fattycakes cookie. Let me tell you that it was hands down the best cookie I have ever had in my whole life. I’m a sucker for the “Chipwich”, not exactly the ice cream sandwich, but a…

Gluten-Free Eats in NYC

This year I spent Canadian Thanksgiving in New York City. We didn’t opt for the traditional turkey and stuffing, but we ate enough other food to make up for it. Everything pictured and described below is gluten-free, as America is surprisingly well-informed about the severity of cross-contamination. I didn’t get sick once and I have quite the sensitive belly. But since we were on vacation, I did not bother to eat strictly vegan (I’ll eat vegan 9 times out of 10, but…

Rock Down To Dinosaur BBQ: A New York Tale

10 Oct, 2013  |  by FGFSadmin

One of my favourite things in life is dinosaurs, so what better place to go to eat to celebrate my birthday than DINOSAUR BBQ. Dinosaur BBQ has several locations throughout New York state and my partner and I ended up checking out the Brooklyn location near Park Slope. Let me tell you, the food there is as excellent as the name and it definitely lives up to the hype. I find good barbecue is really difficult to find in the north east, so this really hit the…

FGFS Does NYC Recap: Delicious Tales from the Big Apple + Interview with Alana Margaret

Da City

New York is one of my favourite cities. My trip this August marked my fourth time to the Big Apple, and every time I go, I am kindly reminded that I should visit more often. It’s not that long of a trip, and it’s a new adventure every time. With each visit, I have become more acquainted with the city and make a point to visit the few places that have become my favourite. This time around was no different….

Getting the S’MAC Attack in NYC

8 Aug, 2013  |  by FGFSadmin

Let’s make one thing clear, Fat Girl Food Squad: I am on the quest to find the perfect Macaroni and Cheese — or at least try all of them.  First up, we headed to New York’s own S’Mac to test out the multiple flavours they have of mac and cheese. S’Mac currently has two locations in NYC, both in Manhattan, and they offer dine-in, take-out, free delivery and catering for all your many cravings. If I lived in this city…

Holidays Ain’t the Same Without Some Carvel’s Ice Cream

8 Aug, 2013  |  by FGFSadmin

Growing up as a kid one of my favourite things to get on my birthday was an ice cream cake, sadly in Ontario we only really had Dairy Queen.  After trying the alternatives, I realized all others were bland.  In my last few trips to New York City,  I have had the pleasure in indulging in Carvel’s ice cream cakes. For those not in the know, Carvel is an all-American ice cream chain that has been around since 1929.  Getting…
