A British style snack bar has opened up in the heart of Parkdale by two long time childhood friends and familiar faces to the food/bar scene, Steve Mckeon (Wrongbar) and Cameron Hutton (The Drake Hotel). The establishment they’ve opened up is the cozy and casual Small Town Food Co. (1263 Queen St. W).

Upon entry into the restaurant, you’re greeted with a friendly vibe: photos sprawled across the wall, candles lit everywhere, huge windows and comfortable seating. Behind the bar, you’ll find both Steve and Cameron – quick to make drink suggestions or a quick joke making you feel right at home.

The food itself is just as charming, starting off with British classics such as the Scotch Egg ($5) served up with a BBQ sauce. If you’ve never experienced a Scotch Egg before, then you must do so at Small Town Food Co. The perfectly cooked inside married with a bit of tender spicy pork rillettes. Outstanding.

Next up, we were delighted by their take on the British classic of Fish and Chips, which included slices of panko-crusted albacore tuna atop a bed of edamame purée, tartar sauce, and chips ($12). It was like deconstructed Captain Highliner realness. Each piece was juicy and delicious, one of the dishes I was recommended prior to going and one of the dishes I would recommend to all if going.

Next up, we tried from Beef Tatayki which had marinated beef, pickled dikon and cucumber which was simple and well done.

The cocktail list shines with both Steve and Cameron having served notable time behind the bar. One of the cocktails I tried out that day was the Remington and Bigelow ($13) with Aperol, Aged Rum, Lemon, Sugar, Pepper and Egg White. It was fresh and reminded me of summer. Each drink is made with care and love and if that isn’t your thing, check out their carefully crafted wine list (by Anton Potvin).
